While the Chiron is considered to be the fastest car on the market today, there is at least one other production car that has something to say about this claim. The team at Koenigsegg doesn’t want usto forget about their supercar that’s built with the insane speed we want to enjoy on the track. The Agera RS is the car that is now sitting on top of the word as the fastest car that can be produced and it showed that prowess recently in a pair of runs that allowed this car to show off what it can do.
The team at Koenigsegg closed down a section of highway in Nevada in order to have a flat and clear area to drive so that the car could drive as fast as possible and see if it was equipped to capture some records away from the Chiron. The Agera RS that was set up to make the run at a pair of records is fitted with the 1MW engine upgrade that allows it to have 1,360 horsepower while using E85 fuel. This car was also equipped with a removable roll cage to help keep the driver safe during the run.
Setting New Records
One of the records that the new Agera RS looked to set is the 0-400-0 km/h record that records the time it takes to reach the speed of 400 km/h and then to return to zero. In order to make a run of this type, a long stretch of road is needed and the Agera RS was able to pull this off on the stretch of flat and clear road in 33.29 seconds. This time was just a little more than eight seconds faster than what the Bugatti Chiron was able to accomplish.
Not only is the Agera RS the current record holder for this sprint and stop run, but it was able to become the fastest production car in the world as well. During a run that covers a mile in each direction, this car averaged a speed of 277.87 mph over the two runs. The top speed reached in one direction was 284.55 mph which is now the current top speed set in a single direction for this test, making the Agera RS a holder of several new records that we can admire and look forward to.
What will the Bugatti answer be to these new records? As the Koenigsegg team celebrates the accomplishments of reaching these impressive speeds, the question becomes how the Chiron will respond. I can’t imagine the team at Bugatti will allow the Agera RS to be the model that will hold these records for very long at all. It’s going to be interesting to see what comes of this team will do in response and we’ll be ready to let you see how the back and forth of the fastest production car awards continues to change hands over the next several months and even next couple of years.
