Not long ago we saw the new 2019 Mazda3 show up on the stage at the LA Auto Show and that reveal brought several questions to the table. One of the questions that was asked more than any other was whether or not a Mazdaspeed3 would be offered for the fun of driving a sports car that comes in this build. The answer received wasn’t what we wanted to hear from Mazda, but it was the answer that makes the most sense when you stop and think about what Mazda is working on.
The New Mazda3 Shows Up
When the 2019 Mazda3 is offered on the market it’s the small and fun car that we want to drive and experience on a daily basis. This car will have the next version of the SkyActiv-G engine under the hood and continue to give us the dynamic driving fun we want when on the road. Later in the year, the Mazda3 is supposed to be offered with the new SkyActiv-X engine that offers the new technology that the team has been working on, but that doesn’t mean we’ll see a Mazdaspeed3 at all.
The Answer is “No” from Mazda
The team at Mazda let the world know that if they were working on the right engine for the Mazdaspeed3, they would offer the model as a specialized vehicle, but they haven’t been working on the engine for the Mazdaspeeed3. Rather than focus on this version of the Mazda3 that would be more exciting, the team stated that it’s not in the budget for them to offer this car right now, but it will keep offering the Mazda3 and work to improve this vehicle that’s right for the drive in the compact car class.
Is there Actually a Market for the Mazdaspeed3?
Not only was the question raised about bringing a Mazdaspeed3 to the market, the question of whether or not the market for this car still exists was also raised. Even though Mazda is sold around the world, the LA Auto Show is where the questions were being asked and the US market is one of the strongest for this brand. Right now, the US market is turning its back on small cars and hot hatches that can be enjoyed during the ride on the roads. With this in mind, it doesn’t make sense for Mazda to add a hot hatch to the mix.
We’re Still Going to be Pleased with Mazda
Even though we won’t see the Mazdaspeed3 arrive on the market anytime soon, the fact is, we’re going to enjoy the added performance and qualities that will be part of what Mazda offers for the Mazda3 and upcoming models. The new engine technology being used will show us the dominance of this brand in this area of automotive technology. Keep an eye on what the Mazda team will give us so that we can have the drive that’s offered by a brand that uses “zoom zoom” as its calling card.
