The Electrified Toyota Models Are Coming

We are already seeing the progression of electrified Toyota models being offered in the market to give us an efficient and reliable drive.

Both the new Sienna and reborn Venza are offered only as hybrid vehicles, but Toyota is taking an even more aggressive approach. The goal for the brand is to have at least one electrified version of every model offered in the lineup by 2025. The challenge for most of us might be figuring out what electrified means for Toyota.

For Toyota, Electrified Means Something Different

Not long ago, we learned that Toyota didn’t see value in EV-only models. This news made us wonder if they were going to continue to invest in their hybrid powertrains, which we know they are with new models that have already hit the market. Even though Toyota doesn’t look at fully-electric models as part of their lineup, we will see many popular hybrid versions to give us the drive we want going forward.

Niche Models Make You Think More Electrified Toyota Models are on the Way

Don’t allow a pair of singular one-off models to fool you. Toyota does offer a full-EV Lexus model in Europe, and they offer the Toyota Mirai. The problem for you is that neither of these vehicles is offered in your area unless you live in California. Toyota has invested in the development of their hybrid powertrains and appears prepared to continue in this direction.

What Does This Mean for the Current Toyota Lineup?

The current lineup offered does feature many electrified Toyota models. When you’re looking for the hybrid versions, all of the cars have a hybrid version, as do most of the SUVs. The Yaris is no longer being made, which leaves it off the list. The only models that still need to have hybrid powertrains added to the lineup are the Tacoma, Tundra, 4Runner, Sequoia, Land Cruiser, 86, and Supra. Currently, our version of the C-HR doesn’t have a hybrid offering, but the European model does and it could be brought to our market.

The Toyota Tundra Could be Next

With other truck models being offered as hybrid or electrified models, the hybrid version of the Toyota Tundra can’t come soon enough. This new truck is expected to be offered in about a year. If this happens, expect the new hybrid powertrain to trickle down to the Sequoia, Tacoma, and 4Runner models. If the Tacoma is fitted with this powertrain first, it might be the first hybrid midsize truck offered in the market.

Will We See Electrified Toyota Models of the Sports Cars

The Toyota 86 is near the end of its life cycle and will be replaced by the GR86 next year. The Toyota Supra is fairly new in the market but will likely reach the end of its current cycle in 2025, which might be the time when Toyota will add a hybrid powertrain to this car. Just imagine these two small sports cars and what they can offer if hybrid power is used for sportiness and not for efficiency in their next iterations.
