The Different Engines of the Newest Toyota Tundra

A new truck deserves our attention, especially when that new truck is one that’s as strong and dependable as the Toyota Tundra.

For the 2022 model year, the Tundra is a completely different truck than before. This impressive workhorse gives us a pair of new powertrains to discuss, but that’s not all. This truck is more capable, more dynamic, more attractive, and best of all, it’s made in the United States. If you’re looking for a truck with all the right features and qualities, you might find everything you need in this Toyota.

Engines Everywhere but not a V8 in Sight

That’s right, the latest version of the Tundra has moved away from the heaviness of the V8 engine to give us two distinct V6 models that provide the power you desire. The base engine is called the i-Force V6, while the hybrid model has the name i-Force Max hybrid. These two power plants provide more power and torque than the previous V8 engine. That means you’ve got a truck that is more efficient while being more powerful than its predecessor; thank you, technology. Let’s take a look at these two incredible engines.

The StartingPoint –i-Force V6

The i-Force V6 engine for the Toyota Tundra is a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine. If you see this as a theme amongst half-ton trucks, don’t be surprised. This engine uses a strong ten-speed automatic transmission and a traditional torque converter to send power to the rear wheels. Of course, 4WD is optional for every version of this Toyota truck.

You’ll find 389 horsepower and 479 lb.-ft. of torque with this engine under the hood. This truck can tow up to 12,000 pounds, putting it right in line with other half-tons, and it returns 18 city/24 hwy mpg in RWD versions. If you opt for the 4WD setup, you’ll enjoy 17 city/23 hwy mpg during your drive.

Hybrid Truck Power –i-Force Max Hybrid V6

Moving to the hybrid powertrain, you’ll find that Toyota has added an electric motor-generator to the mix. Similar to but unlike the Toyota Prius, a truck with this powertrain can drive on electric-only power, but that is limited to parking lot speeds. Toyota does not list an EV range for this powertrain.

The transmission used for the hybrid version is also a ten-speed automatic. The power you’ll find with the i-Force Max Hybrid is 437 horsepower and 583 lb.-ft. of torque. Towing drops a little to 11,450 pounds, but that is probably still a number that will work well for you. Fuel mileage comes in at 20 city/24 hwy mpg for RWD models and 19 city/22 hwy mpg for the 4WD versions.

As you can see from the numbers, the hybrid powertrain is more efficient in the city but not on the highway. If you drive your truck around the city often, the hybrid version of the Toyota Tundra could be the right one for you.

A Unique Truck Bed for the Tundra

Toyota has developed a composite truck be supported by an aluminum structure that is standard on all Tundra models. This bed material is backed by their warranty and rated to never need a liner or protector for this area of the truck. The material weighs less than steel, is more resistant to scratching and denting, it won’t rust, and it does not need to be painted. This new material could revolutionize this part of trucks for the future. Just imagine using this truck for your business and knowing you never have to worry about protecting the bed area of the truck.

The Whole Crew Can Enjoy the Ride

The Toyota Tundra in the CrewMax build gives both rows of passengers ample legroom and headroom to be comfortable while riding from one job to the other. This modern and rugged truck features a large touchscreen for the infotainment along with a digital instrument display that can be 12.3-inches in higher trims. Choose the Capstone trim level, and you’ve got a 14-inch multimedia touchscreen that responds when you simply say, “Hey Toyota,” and let the Drive Connect system wake up and do your bidding. The Tundra is now one of the most advanced trucks in the market.
