Jaguar Land Rover Looks Towards AI With Nvidia Partnership

The next step in the evolution of driving is to add AI to our lives. Jaguar Land Rover entered a partnership with Nvidia to make that happen.

Artificial Intelligence continues to grow and improve across many industries, including automotive. Many of the safety features we use today are close to what AI will eventually offer, but not quite there. As we come closer to a time when cars can drive themselves, Jaguar wants to be in the mix to ensure they are the brand we think of when we want the best driving experience possible.

What Does This Partnership Mean for JLR?

Partnering with Nvidia allows a range of technology features to become available for vehicles starting in 2025. That is the goal year for computer chips from Nvidia to be part of nearly every JLR vehicle. These chips aren’t simple, normal chips; they are designed to handle AI features to give owners a heightened driving experience. This means many owners will find some self-driving capabilities in models from JLR with these chips installed. Imagine driving down the highway with your hands off the wheel and your feet off the pedals while knowing the vehicle will go where you need it to go.

Nothing New for this Automaker

If this is the first you’ve heard of Jaguar Land Rover developing self-driving technology, it won’t be the last. This company has been developing this tech for several years, testing it in various places, including off-road environments, on busy city streets, in neighborhoods, and, of course, on highways. Initially, JLR intends for the self-driving features to rank at Level 3 on the SAE scale. This level means a vehicle can handle some driving without intervention from a human driver, but not all driving. We’ll see JLR models capable of offering limited highway driving experiences without your involvement. The driver still needs to be ready to take over as needed but can relax for a bit. This is only the beginning of the technology we’ll see from this brand. With this door open, it might not be too long before we see fully-autonomous JLR models on the road.

More than Just AI with Nvidia

The story doesn’t end with computer chips in vehicles providing AI technology for self-driving. Nvidia will also provide machine learning processes to Jaguar Land Rover to improve production processes. Machine learning is also known as deep learning and is an additional AI feature that will improve the production of vehicles and communication with models already on the road. Updates through the Nvidia chips can be sent over the air, much like Tesla with their continual updates to vehicles with advanced technology installed.

If you think this partnership is unique, you’d be wrong. Nvidia already has partnership agreements for the next-generation hardware and software they develop with Volvo, Volkswagen Group, Mercedes-Benz, and Bosh. Adding JLR to the mix is just one more company that will benefit from these advanced chips and the software Nvidia is currently developing.
