For the past few months, Toyota has done nothing but tease us regarding this truck, but we’re coming much closer to seeing the real thing. What will this new Toyota midsize pickup offer when it finally arrives?
When will we see this new Taco truck?
Called Taco for short, Toyota has confirmed this new midsize pickup will debut on May 19. This unveiling ensures we know this pickup will arrive in time for the 2024 model year as part of the fall lineup. It’s possible the most common trims and features offered in this truck will appear first, with specialty versions arriving after the calendar flips to 2024.
A teaser that Tacoma fans love to see
The latest teaser from Toyota confirms the option of a manual transmission. This feature is showing up in fewer and fewer vehicles, but it will appear in the new 2024 Toyota Tacoma, giving us a great way to drive when we want to use three pedals and both feet. The stick shift might be limited to only a few trims, but it does give us a feature we love. Those who thought the manual would be dead in this Toyota can rejoice in the knowledge that this new truck will include a classic feature.
Trailhunter is a new name in the Tacoma lineup
The 2022 SEMA show gave us a look at a new Trailhunter trim for various Toyota trucks and SUVs. This could be the next trim added, and it will likely show up in the Tacoma before it appears in any other vehicle. We’re unsure whether the Trailhunter trim will be situated above the TRD Pro or be an off-road overlanding trim that fits between the TRD Pro and TRD Off-Road trims. This new Trailhunter version receives some ARB 4×4 accessories that make this truck much more capable wherever you go.
How will i-Force Max be applied?
Some have suggested the i-Force Max name will be used for the Tacoma the same way it’s applied to the Tundra. Will we see the same powertrain as the Tundra and Sequoia, or could this powertrain be a smaller hybrid powertrain for the Tacoma? In the Tundra and Sequoia models, the 3.4-liter i-Force Max V6 hybrid powertrain delivers 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque. If this powertrain is in the Tacoma, it will be the most powerful Tacoma ever made. Most expect this new i-Force Max powertrain to be smaller in this new midsize truck.
The right upgrades for the rear
We received confirmation the new Toyota Tacoma will include a set of rear disc brakes and Fox shocks to give you the drive you want when out on the trails. These items will be featured in the TRD Pro trim, giving you the right stopping power and suspension feeling when you’re out on the road. As strange as it sounds, the current Tacoma uses rear drum brakes, which is an antiquated way of stopping. If the Tacoma could eventually be an electric truck, disc brakes are a must.
How many engines will the Tacoma include?
There should be three powertrains offered for this new midsize Toyota truck. We know about the i-Force Max powertrain, even if we don’t know how it will be applied. There could also be a powertrain that comes from the Highlander. Some things this might be the 2.4-liter turbocharged engine that delivers 265 horsepower and 309 lb-ft of torque. Another potential engine for this truck is the same one offered in the Toyota Crown. This engine produces 340 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque.
Will this new Tacoma be an electric pickup?
Early teasers showed us a possible electric pickup concept. Although this was one of the first hints at what the next Toyota Tacoma could be, it doesn’t seem like an electric model will arrive when this new truck appears at dealerships this year. If Toyota develops an electric powertrain for the Tacoma, it’s more likely to appear at the end of 2024 rather than before the end of 2023.
