Top 3 Small SUVs for 2024

Top 3 Small SUVs for 2024

Looking for a new subcompact sports utility vehicle? The Hyundai Kona, Kia Seltos, and Honda HR-V are our picks for the top 3 small SUVs for 2024.

Because Bigger Isn’t Always Better

Everyone has heard the adage that good things sometimes come in smaller packages, and these three subcompact SUVs prove it’s still true.

The Hyundai Kona, Kia Seltos, and Honda HR-V all provide the versatility of an SUV with lower associated costs than their full-sized rivals. Find out what sets them apart below.

The Hyundai Kona Is Better Than Ever

The Hyundai Kona hit the market in 2018. This year, it’s undergoing its first redesign, indicating the automaker’s commitment to keeping up with the times. The changes bring the subcompact SUV fully up-to-date by modernizing its style and adding industry-leading driver assistance tech.

With a 147 hp 4-cyl engine and automatic transmission engineered for fuel economy, the Hyundai Kona is an ideal commuter car at 31 combined mpg. Drivers wanting extra get-up-and-go can upgrade to the N Line or Limited trim for a more powerful 195-hp 4-cyl turbo.

This year’s Kona grew slightly in all dimensions, extending rear legroom and cargo space. The subcompact SUV also got some tech upgrades, with an available 12.3” dual-screen setup, four USB ports, and an impressive Remote Start Parking assist feature.

The Kia Seltos Gets Some Crucial Upgrades

Like the Hyundai Kona, the Kia Seltos is an excellent option for drivers who want a high-quality subcompact SUV but are shopping on a budget. The top contender also received an upgrade for the 2024 model year, with an improved optional turbocharged engine and more refined features.

The base-level engine for the Kia Seltos is nothing to write home about at 146 hp, though it does boast 27 combined mpg. However, this year’s higher trim levels now feature a 195 hp 1.6L 4-cyl turbo paired with a new 8-speed transmission that gives them some much-needed extra power.

The Seltos’ newly available 10.25” dual panoramic displays are available on all but the base trim. The LX models continue to use the old, 8” touchscreen infotainment center. If drivers can afford to skip the entry-level model, this subcompact SUV has much to offer in 2024.

The Honda HR-V Is Still a Top Contender Among Small SUVs

Unlike the Kona and the Seltos, the Honda HR-V has not undergone any significant changes for the 2024 model year. That said, last year’s total redesign placed it in the running for the top subcompact SUV, and all the essentials carry over.

The HR-V gets 28 combined mpg, placing it between the Kona and the Seltos in fuel efficiency. The 158 hp 2.0L 4-cyl base engine lends a slightly sporty feel, but that’s not what sets this subcompact SUV apart. What drivers love about the HR-V is its IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating.

Plenty of Great Small SUVs  to Choose From in 2024

All three of the subcompact SUVs on this list are reliable, versatile, and thoroughly modern. The best way for drivers to decide which will suit their needs is to head to a local dealership to take one or more of these top three small SUVs out for a test drive.
