Mazda CX-5 vs. Buick Envista: Which Small SUV Wins?

Mazda CX-5 vs. Buick Envista: Which Small SUV Wins?

Are the 2025 Mazda CX-5 and Buick Envista in the same class? Both are small SUVs, but the Envista is quite a bit smaller than the Mazda.

These two small SUVs are made to give you an enjoyable drive on any road but are much different in terms of size and spaciousness. Both SUVs have premium-level materials and qualities that give you great driving experiences, but they are very different in terms of power, driving pleasure, and performance. Let’s take a look at what each SUV brings to the market.

Which crossover has more power?

Mazda CX-5

The base powertrain available for the CX-5 is a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain gives you 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. This setup gives you 23 city/29 hwy mpg, making it a relatively efficient setup.

The upgraded powertrain adds a turbocharger to the mix, which increases power to 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. This means you have a lot more power when you choose one of the higher trims of the CX-5 with the turbocharged setup. With this powertrain, you’ve got 22 city/27 hwy mpg.

Buick Envista

The Envista has a much smaller powertrain offering than the Mazda SUV. This little Buick uses a 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. This is the only powertrain offered for this SUV, and it gives you 137 horsepower and 162 lb-t of torque. Regardless of the trim, you won’t have nearly the same power in the Envista that you get out of the CX-5. This Buick SUV is only offered with FWD and delivers 28 city/32 hwy mpg.

The Mazda CX-5 is much more powerful than the Buick Envista. The Mazda also offers AWD, while the Buick only comes in FWD.

Which SUV has more cargo space?

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that The CX-5 has more cargo space than the Envista. The Mazda SUV is a compact SUV, while the Buick is a subcompact model. This means the CX-5 is larger in every way than the Envista. If you want more room for your cargo, you’ll want to go with the 30.8 cubic feet in the Mazda rather than the 20.7 cubic feet in the Buick SUV. When the rear seats are folded down, the CX-5 offers 59.3 cubic feet of space compared to 42.0 cubic feet in the Envista.

Which SUV has better interior materials and style?

You’ll spend all of your time inside the cabin of whichever SUV you choose, which means you should want that vehicle to provide you with an impressive interior package and lots of features that make sense for your drive. The Mazda CX-5 has first-rate materials and style that might make you think that you’re driving a vehicle from a German luxury brand.

The Buick Envista has room for four adults, which makes it comfortable but not extremely spacious. The materials don’t quite reach the luxury levels that you might want to enjoy when you’re driving. You’ll have the features you want, but this Buick could be more stylish.

This system works using voice controls as well and has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which are standard across the board. The CX-5 comes with Mazda Connected Services that offer several functions and a subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot.

The Buick SUV has two digital displays, one that’s an 8.0-inch gauge cluster and the other that is an 11.0-inch touchscreen for the infotainment. This larger touchscreen makes it easy to enjoy the infotainment system, which also has wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot.

Which SUV should you drive?

The only demit to the Mazda is the antiquated infotainment system, which could be an issue for some drivers. On the other hand, if you don’t mind the smaller Envista, you’ll love the infotainment system and the sporty exterior style of this Buick SUV.
