Various rumors and the recent spotting of the 2024 Mustang prototype lead many to believe Ford will drop the V8 engine.

Codename S650

While there have been rumors about the next generation of the Ford Mustang circulating for some time, a prototype has been spotted, providing more concrete ideas of what to expect for this car’s 2024 model year. Spy photos released that the new Mustang codenamed the S650, keeps things simple with its exterior design.

The 2024 Mustang will keep its iconic long hood, short deck, and 2+2 layout. There are some modern updates to this rig’s look, but we’ll have to wait for the official release to know more.

Engine Expectations

The prototype viewed earlier this year had too small of wheels and exhaust to have a large engine under the hood. Most likely, Ford will keep the 2.3-liter turbocharged engine that adorns base-level models today. The 2024 model is expected to also offer the Coyote 5.0-liter V8 as the GT’s top-level powertrain.

The Future Is Electric

If the next generation is likely to have a potent Coyote V8 engine, how can anyone say that the V8 Mustang is going extinct? This speculation comes from two places. First, every sports and muscle car manufacturer seems to be moving away from gas-powered engines in exchange for electric powertrains. In many cases, federal regulations and manufacturing costs make it challenging to build a compliant and affordable powerhouse.

Dodge has already announced the end of V8-equipped cars at the end of next year. There are also rumors that GM is looking to move the Chevy Camaro to an all-electric powertrain. Ford would be the last major brand to make this move. This news is fitting since the Ford Mustang was the first pony car; it only makes sense that it would be the last to make this shift.

The other piece of the puzzle that guides speculation is Ford’s electronification of the Mustang. Most shoppers already know of the Ford Mustang Mache, Ford’s first fully electric SUV. This ride may not look like the iconic Mustang we all know and love, but it maintains the spirit of this iconic brand name.

In addition, there are rumors that the 2024 Ford Mustang will have several hybrid powertrain options. The evidence is clear that Ford is playing with more eco-friendly and electric options for this Sportster.

According to Autoforecast Studios, Ford will continue offering gas-powered engines like the infamous v8 through the end of the decade, but it sounds like this engine will go the way of the Dodo by 2030.

While some are sad to see gas-powered Mustangs disappear, others are excited to see what comes next for America’s favorite pony car.

The next generation Ford Mustang is going through some changes; at least, that’s what Ford enthusiasts expect to hear at the Detroit Auto Show.
