Once you know what to look for, the family resemblances pop out everywhere.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Platform sharing lets automakers cut development time and battery costs while keeping each brand&#8217;s identity intact.<\/li>\n<li>GM, Hyundai Motor Group, Toyota, and Stellantis all build multiple SUVs from the same blueprint.<\/li>\n<li>The differences usually come down to styling, interior trim, tuning, and feature availability rather than core mechanicals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Why Automakers Build SUVs in Pairs<\/h2>\n<p>Sharing a chassis isn&#8217;t lazy engineering. It&#8217;s smart economics. When brands under the same corporate umbrella share a platform, they compress development timelines, and standard battery modules cut per-kilowatt-hour costs. Strategic plans for next-gen software underline a sector pivot <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gadgetreview.com\/different-cars-that-are-secretly-same\">from mechanical differentiation to user-experience ecosystems<\/a><\/strong>. In other words, the bones get reused so the design teams can focus on the stuff buyers actually notice, like grilles, screens, and seat materials.<\/p>\n<p>The trend is only picking up speed. In August 2025, Hyundai Motor Company and General Motors announced plans to co-develop five new vehicles, marking a big step in their partnership. The deal includes four models for Central and South America, a compact SUV, a car, and two pickups, plus an electric commercial van for North America, all launching around 2028. GM will lead development of mid-size trucks, while Hyundai will focus on compact vehicles and vans. Once production scales, the companies expect annual sales of over 800,000 units, with shared platforms wearing distinct brand designs.<\/p>\n<h2>GM&#8217;s Full-Size SUV Family<\/h2>\n<p>The classic example sits in driveways across America. Comparing the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon is a lot like getting to know twins. At first glance, they look alike, act alike, sound alike, and seem for all the world like two kernels on a corn cob at the county fair. But once you spend time with them, the differences start to surface.<\/p>\n<p>They use the same powertrains and even most of the same interior dimensions. The standard-length Yukon is essentially the same length as the Tahoe, while the Yukon XL is a twin of the Suburban. Throw in the Cadillac Escalade, and GM gets four nameplates from one engineering investment. The split shows up at the register. The Tahoe is positioned downmarket of the Yukon&#8217;s more luxurious aims, so the Chevy comes in with a lower purchase price. The Tahoe starts at $59,000, and the Yukon comes in at $8,200 more, for a price of $67,200.<\/p>\n<h2>The Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride Tale<\/h2>\n<p>Few SUV cousins get more attention than this duo. Hyundai and Kia fall under the Hyundai Motor Co. umbrella, so they turn out similar products in many segments, like the Sonata and Optima, Tucson and Sportage, and Ioniq 5 and EV6. Styling used to be the main thing separating the two brands, but the latest three-row Palisade and Telluride show more differences under the skin too.<\/p>\n<p>The numbers tell the story. Both ride on the same 116.9-inch wheelbase, and overall length is basically a wash. The Telluride measures 199.2 inches long, while the Palisade ranges from 199.2 to 200.4 inches depending on trim. Width is also separated by fractions of an inch. The newest generation finally added a hybrid option to both. The shared hybrid setup pairs a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a six-speed automatic and two electric motors. Total system output is 329 horsepower, and all-wheel drive comes standard with the hybrid.<\/p>\n<h2>Toyota and Jeep Get In on the Action<\/h2>\n<p>Toyota&#8217;s redesigned 4Runner is more closely related to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dealerindepth.com\/index.php\/2025\/11\/18\/toyota-might-actually-build-that-electric-land-cruiser-pickup-for-america\/\">its pickup sibling than most buyers realize<\/a><\/strong>. Debuting in early April as a 2025 model, the first properly new 4Runner in 15 years shares a platform with the Tacoma. That means it also shares powertrain options, namely a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and the i-Force Max hybrid setup.<\/p>\n<p>Stellantis is doing the same with its electric SUV push. The Jeep Recon will ride on the new STLA platform that also sits under the Dodge Charger EV and the Wagoneer S. The Wagoneer S will be the fastest model ever from the brand, with 600 horsepower on tap. This electric SUV should hit 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds on Stellantis&#8217;s STLA Large platform. One architecture, three very different vehicles aimed at three very different buyers.<\/p>\n<h2>What This Means for Shoppers<\/h2>\n<p>If you&#8217;re cross-shopping platform twins, the smart play is to drive both. The mechanical bits will feel almost identical, but suspension tuning, interior materials, infotainment quirks, and warranty coverage can sway the deal. Sometimes the cheaper sibling gives you 90 percent of the experience for thousands less. Other times, the pricier badge throws in features the bargain version simply can&#8217;t get.
