Wagons are Becoming More Popular than Ever

Wagons are Becoming More Popular than Ever

One of the greatest surprises you’ll find in the automotive market is the fact that wagons are selling in higher numbers than in many years.

While you’re not going to find the “family truckster” that we saw in the National Lampoon movies, you will see several models that offer you more cargo room than the sedans that we already enjoy driving. Similar to electric vehicles, wagons only occupy a small part of the market, but they do offer you several choices with models from brands that you admire and want to enjoy when it’s time to get behind the wheel and take a drive.

An Uptick in the US

While the entire automotive market is seeing slower sales for the past thirteen months when compared to the two years prior, the wagon market is an interesting one to view. Five years ago, wagons were barely thought of and were considered to be an oddity from some of the luxury brands, but today, we see a growth in this segment of 29 percent compared to that time. The 2018 calendar year saw 237,600 wagons sold in the US, which is a tremendous number considering this is a part of the market that most of us don’t consider when it’s time to purchase a vehicle.

What’s Caused this Increase in Sales?

There are now more models of wagons on the market than were offered five years ago. Today, you can look to the brands of Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Porsche, Jaguar, Volvo, and Buick to find the wagon that you want to drive. The wagon of today is sportier and more comfortable than the wagons of old. You can feel comfortable carving up the road with a wagon that has the ability to carry all your gear and give you the drive you want to enjoy when you get behind the wheel.

An Alternative Choice

When you consider the possibility of a wagon as the vehicle you want to drive, you’re likely looking at a small SUV as well. Consider the stance, which is lower to the ground, the performance offered, which is typically more impressive, and the cargo capacity of a wagon that you might want to drive. Forget about the negative association that wagon has with the automotive market and let this small area of the market offer you something you can choose that isn’t a crossover SUV.

Still Only a Small Part of the Market

As mentioned, the wagon market is much like the electric vehicle market. This is a segment that only occupies an extremely small fraction of the overall automotive market with sales that only represent 1.4 percent of the total market share. Even so, the growth we see could continue, in spite of the fact that several automakers have chosen to delete sedans from their lineups for the future. Will you drive a wagon or a small crossover SUV? Before you make your final choice, you should at least give a wagon a chance to be the right vehicle for you to drive.
