Will Cadillac make another pickup truck? Recently a fictional Cadillac truck concept design was shared online, giving hints of what could be possible.
Don’t put anything past Cadillac. The brand is bringing a host of electric vehicles, one of which should require more than $300,000 to own. That seems like some lofty heights for an American luxury brand, but Cadillac is reaching high with its new EV lineup. Could a new electric pickup truck become part of the mix? It’s certainly possible, but not likely.
A Sketch that brings it all together
Recently, a GM designer by the name of Andre McMillan drew a pickup truck with the Cadillac badge on the front grille. This design was shared on the GM Design Instagram page and met with the approval of many fans. This design is easily futuristic but doesn’t rule out the possibility of a high-end luxury truck returning to the market, especially with the new EV world of Cadillac.
The sketched truck appears to be a monstrous and powerful machine. Whether it’s an electric truck or not is still up for debate, but the front face and aggressive stance make it easy to see how a new luxury truck could be possible. In fact, the sketch is strong enough to portray vertical air intakes, an embedded LED light bar on each outer edge, and front underbody skid plates. This final item gives a hint that this could be an off-road beast; but we can only hope.
Is a Cadillac truck out of the question?
The sketched design may have been met with the approval of adoring fans, but a Cadillac truck concept could be far in the future. The brand already has its hands full with the host of new electric SUVs heading our way, but don’t put a high-end Cadillac truck out of the list of possibilities for GM. Remember, this is the automaker that brought us the GMC Hummer EV, taking electric power to new heights with a truck that toppled $100,000 easily. The same could be done with a new Cadillac electric pickup truck.
General Motors has everything necessary to make the design sketch come to life. The Hummer EV is a massive truck that utilizes the Ultium battery platform. This platform will underpin all new GM electric vehicles, making it a great option for a potential Cadillac pickup truck.
In addition to the platform, GM has the top trims of the new Silverado EV and Sierra EV above $100,000. This means it wouldn’t be a stretch to put a Cadillac model in the mix and ask for a little more for the luxury badge. As long as the Cadillac version doesn’t go too far into the six-figure pricing arena, it’s certainly possible to see a new electric truck wearing the V-shaped grille and recognizable badge.
Hasn’t Cadillac offered a truck in the past?
The former Cadillac truck, the Escalade EXT, went out of production in 2013. This pickup resembled the Chevrolet Avalanche much more than a traditional pickup truck. This could be a good thing for a new Cadillac truck concept and a return to this market. The new Chevy and GMC electric trucks share some elements with the former Avalanche, including the midgate, which opens the rear window/wall area to expand the short bed into a much longer cargo space to carry and haul full-size sheets of plywood.
Of course, if we use the sketch as the starting point, the new electric pickups might not be bold enough to match up with the sketched Cadillac truck. Still, most designs start out as sketches and end up looking like something else.
Does this shared unibody quality signify a return to the market for a Cadillac pickup? Not necessarily, but it’s possible.
Should Cadillac add a truck to the lineup?
In recent years, Cadillac has struggled with the right mix of vehicles and changed its brand image from a builder of large sedans to exciting, sporty luxury cars. After these cars took hold, a host of SUVs came from this brand, and the sedans became even more exciting and fun to drive. The next step is electrification, which will likely go better if Cadillac sticks to the body styles that have worked for it in the past, sedans and SUVs.
Creating a Cadillac truck concept to eventually hit the production line could be a huge risk for the brand. Still, don’t put a truck wearing the Cadillac badge past GM. All necessary elements are already in place; all they have to do is pull the trigger on this project.
