New Engines Now

The news that Volkswagen was going to swap out the engines in a couple of their models was something that was being discussed and expected in the future, but little did anyone realize that the future was now. This brand has recently announced the use of an engine that has already proven itself as a stout performer, in a pair of the vehicles we love. This means more of what we want in the models that have provided us with the drive and quality that are right for use on the roads that we love to drive.
The base engine of Volkswagen lineup for the Jetta, Golf, Beetle, and Passat has been a 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that provided 170 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque that maxed at 4,800 rpm and gave us a combined 27 mpg. The Jetta and Golf will continue to use this engine as the base offering and allow these two to continue on with this engine, but the Beetle and the Passat will make use of a different engine that has been found in another one of the VW models over the past few years and has become a favorite.

The New/Old Favorite Engine

The Volkswagen Tiguan has been the smallest of the SUV models offered from this brand and it has been powered at the base level by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Amazingly, this engine offers us more of what we want for the two car models that will now house this engine as their base model. The surprise isn’t the fact that VW is now going to add this to the lineup for 2018, but the surprise comes in the fact that VW hasn’t done this in the past, considering the power and when its achieved for these two cars.
By moving up to the new 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, the Passat and Beetle will have a full 184 horsepower and 221 lb.-ft. of torque. This power is achieved at 4,400 rpm and the torque will now be achieved at 1,600 rpm. In addition to having the power needed at a lower rpm level, these two cars will also achieve as much as 29 mpg combined, which is an increase to offer exactly what we want when searching for and finding an exceptional powertrain under the hood. Now, these two provide more power and much better overall efficiency for the drive.
As a brand that was mired by scandal, the fact that VW is committing to bringing better fuel mileage and more power under the hood of two of the favorite models on the road will help make this brand one that can continue to see a rise in success. The addition of this engine to these two models will take place for the 2018 model year, which means you’ll be able to purchase them on the car lots of VW in the near future. As we come closer to the launch of this new model year we will have more information regarding the specs of these two impressive small cars.
